Having a right nightmare tonight with this, any suggestions much appreciated.

I run a website for a group I belong to, so I guess that makes me the administrator(?) however today when I have tried to access the page it says that I am not authorized to view this page and asks me to put in a user name and password. I've tried on both Firefox and IE. The page should be freely available to be viewed by anyone and a password is not needed to view the site. I've searched for the page via Google, and have the same problem. Tried on a different computer and still its asking for a user name and password.

I've put the error code it gives me, 401 in the Microsoft Help and Support site and it tells me to ...

To resolve this problem, enable at least one authentication method. To do this, follow these steps:

1. From the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
2. Under the Tree pane, browse to the desired Web site.
3. Right-click the Web site, and then click Properties.
4. On the Directory Security tab, under Anonymous access and authentication control, click Edit.
5. Select (and implement) at least one type of authentication method.

The only place I can find Admin Tools is in the control panel, and I'm reluctant to start messing about if this is not the problem and wary of putting my administrators user name and password in case it is something more suspicious if you see what I mean.

Also just today I have had an email bounce back to the email address associated with this page saying ....

Remote host said: 554 Your access to this mail system has been rejected due to the sending MTA's poor reputation.

..... just wondered what you guys thought

Yes, that looks like the standard windows authentication login prompt. If you do as mentioned in the post above, you can turn on anonymous authentication on that site and turn off the windows authentication and it should at least give you the DNN page.

OK thanks for that ... will try that in the morning, as it's given me a headache so I'm off to bed now :)

This has never happened before and we've had the website for a couple of years now.

Do you know why it should suddenly change? this is also happening to other people on different computers ...so just wondering how people will be able to view the site?  as most people just drop in and look at the site and they don't have user names or passwords.

Yes, the setting will need to be changed on the computer that hosts the website, not your local computer. Once it's changed there then everyone should have access. If you have shared hosting, you may be able to do it yourself or you might need to email your hoster and tell them you want anonymous authentication enabled for your site.

If it was changed, it was probably because of something your hoster did. Best to check with them.

Hello

Finally have the answers to my website problems. Seems the site was due for renewal and the invoice had been misplaced, so we were cut off :)

Anyway, by the time we'd figured all this out and tried to fix it, it was too late, and we're going to have to build the site again from scratch.

All our artwork, logos and stuff had been uploaded, so do you know if there is anyway we can access any of the site or the associated files?

I'm not sure Lorraine. You would need to talk to your hosting provider and ask them if all the files you had previously are still up there. If you have ftp access, you could try connecting and see what remains.
